English embroidered lace or Broderie anglais is a form of whitework embroidery in which round/oval holes are pierced in the cotton fabric, and the cut edges then overcast; these holes would join to form a pattern. The technique originated in 16th-century Europe and the name, French for 'English embroidery'. It's production was not confined to England as its name would imply however in the 19th century, it was very popular as a trimming on English nightwear and petticoats, Present-day broderie anglaise is generally done by machine.
Popular since the 16th-century, present-day Swiss lace is made on old looms.
