| Leavers and French Valencienne

Until the early to mid 18th century, lace was made by hand using bobbins. *English Leavers lace has been made since the mid-18th century on hand powered looms. In the year 1813, John Leavers, a local framesmith from Nottingham invented the leavers loom. The loom comprised of two machines working in harmony to produce the most delicate of lace with inticate patterns. The invention of these machines resulted in the faster, lower cost production of lace allowing it to be exported and making it more accessible to the growing population of the British Isles. These original machines are still used today producing the same lace patterns.
*In 2010 we will be stocking our new range of les dentelles de Bretagne. Beautiful narrow French laces from Brittany. Valencienne lace originates from the French city of Valenciennes. Since the mid-19th century, they have been made on the same looms in Lyon, France.
For many generations, these fine English and French cotton laces have been the choice of top heirloom costume designers and Royalty.
