| Pure Silk
Legend has it that the Chinese Princess Hsi Ling Shi discovered the key to silk fabric in 2640BC. On retrieving a cocoon which had dropped into her tecup, it emerged as a single silk thread. Silk takes on colour vividly, making even the most subtle of shades rich, opulent and adored by everyone.
Silk Fabric Glossary
Silk Brocade/Damask - The jacquard family, to which brocade and damask belongs, are dimensional weaves. A silk brocade appears as an embossed surface, a damask flat. Both very elegant. Our full width miniature silk damask and brocades are of superior quality and the finest available. Fabulous for those who want the best for doll costumes and 1:12th scale miniature projects. (this is not the narrow width silk brocade designed for the gentlemen's neck tie market. Neck tie silk brocade is of a lower quality and is not fine enough for miniature work).
Jap Silk/Pongee/habutai - a very fine, wispy silk fabric, very light to handle. Makes beautiful gowns for miniature dolls. Perfect for layering, making 1:12th scale petticoats, camisoles and combinations. Excellent for lining the costume of a larger doll or bear.
Silk Charmeuse - a satin weave (shiny one side, matte the other). Considered the prize of the silk family, this buttery fabric has a substantial hand; drapes beautifully as gowns for tiny dolls.
Silk Chiffon - a fine sheer fabric that is very soft and transparent. Great for layering over other solid silk fabrics. Perfect for all doll clothes especially 1:12th scale.
Silk Changeant - a fine sheer fabric similar to chiffon that is very soft and transparent with a two-tone colour. Great for layering over other silk fabrics. Brilliant for tiny doll clothes especially 1:12th scale.
Silk Dupioni - Magnificant colours: solids and warped iridescent (2-tone), this silk fibre is woven from the shorter strands resulting from double cocoons. Available from us as smooth or with light texture. Our range of Dupioni silks are superoir to most and have been chosen especially for doll costuming and miniature projects.
Silk Georgette - a semi-sheer crepe weave, heavier than chiffon but lighter than crepe with a textured, spongy surface. Brilliant for layering over other fabrics in doll costuming. Suitable for 1:12th scale costuming projects.
Silk Organdie - Sheer, and luxurious. Excellent for pleating, smocking, and manipulating. Our silk organdies are more drapey than their manmade fibre alternatives. Checkout our specialist ranges of silk organdie. Suitable for most doll projects and dolls house miniaure costuming/furnishing projects.
Silk Velvet - Our silk velevet is very soft and drapey, extremely rich and luxurious, ideal for doll house costuming, Tudor/Elizabethan gowns, coats, capes and furnishings like curtains and bed covers.
